Smart links vs pre-saves: which to use for your next release

Every independent artist getting ready for a release asks the same question: should you push pre-saves before release day, or wait and send people to a smart link once the song is out? The answer depends on who you are asking and how much effort you are asking them to make.

Pre-Saves: High Intent, More Friction

On most pre-save services, a fan connects their Spotify, Apple Music or Deezer account and authorises the service to add your track to their library when it comes out. That works, but it asks for real commitment: a login and a permissions screen before they have heard the song.

When pre-saves work best

Pre-saves suit people who already know you. Your current fans, mailing-list subscribers and engaged followers are far more likely to get through an authorisation screen because they already trust your music.

What IndieRocket's pre-save page does

IndieRocket's pre-save page takes a lighter approach. It shows a countdown and collects an email address, then notifies the fan when the song is out. Fans can also opt in to hear about every future release. It does not save the track to anyone's library. Every sign-up gets the release-day email, and fans who opt in to future releases join your Subscribers list, an audience you own.

The cold-traffic problem

Sending paid ads for strangers to a pre-save link is usually the hardest version of this. Someone who has never heard of you has to tap the ad, wait for a page, pick a service, log in and grant permissions, for a song they can't play yet. Expect many of them to drop out along the way. Unless you give them a reason, such as an exclusive download, cold ad money is better spent once the music is live.

Smart Links: Low Friction, Built for Scale

A smart link is a single page that sends listeners to their preferred streaming service once your track is out. There is no login and no permission prompt: one tap opens the song.

When smart links work best

Smart links are made for release day and after, for new and existing listeners alike. That makes them the natural destination for paid social campaigns, where most people meet your music for the first time.

What to measure

Compare page visits with streaming-service clicks. Both are counts of events, not of people, so a fan who comes back later can be counted again; use clicks per visit to compare ads and releases, not as the share of fans who listened. Costs and rates vary a lot by genre, country and creative, so compare each release with your own earlier ones rather than a published average. A click to Spotify shows intent; it is not a confirmed stream.

How to Sequence Both Across a Release

A simple plan uses both tools across about four weeks.

1. Pre-release (two to one weeks before)

Point your posts and email list at the pre-save page. If you run ads now, avoid sending strangers straight to it. Run video ads to find people who respond to the song, or offer something exclusive, like a behind-the-scenes video, through a Fan Gate in exchange for an email address.

2. Launch (days 0 to 3)

As soon as the music is live, switch your links to the smart link. Retarget people who watched your videos or visited your pages during the pre-release phase. On phones, Fast Mode pages load quickly and hand the listener to their chosen music app.

3. Sustain (days 4 to 28)

Widen your campaigns, test different videos and keep the smart link in your bio and posts. Review the visit and click data every few days so you know which creative is worth more budget.

Track the Right Events

Whether you are collecting sign-ups or sending people to streaming services, connect your Meta pixel so you can see which ads lead to action.

  • Pre-save and gate pages: track page views and sign-ups (Lead events) so Meta can look for people likely to sign up.
  • Smart links: track the click to a streaming service, not just the page view, so delivery favours people who choose to listen.
  • Review regularly: pause ads that spend without producing visits or clicks, and move budget to the ones that do.

How IndieRocket Fits In

IndieRocket keeps these pieces in one workspace:

  • Smart links: Fast Mode for ad traffic and Full Mode with audio previews and lyrics for organic visitors.
  • Pre-save pages: a countdown and email sign-up for release notifications, with an opt-in for future releases.
  • Fan Gates: exclusive downloads, secret links or promo codes in exchange for an email or a follow.
  • Music Ads: Facebook and Instagram campaigns from your own Meta ad account, with delivery, visits, clicks and sign-ups reported separately.

The Takeaway

Pre-saves and smart links do different jobs. Use pre-saves, or an email sign-up, to bring your existing fans along before release day, and use smart links to reach new listeners once the music is out. Matching each tool to the right audience is what makes your budget go further.
